The US Open is one of the four Grand Slam tennis events that take place every year. Every top tennis player dreams of one day winning the US Open in New York, USA. In 2016, the tournament will take place from Aug 29 – Sep 11, and will attract all of the top seeds to New York, USA.

This tournament is known for being a hard court grand slam. The other Grand Slam events include Wimbledon, which is played on grass, the French Open, which is played on a clay surface, and the Australian Open, which is also played on a hard court just down the road from stadiums where many like to place AFL footy betting punts.

The US Open Tennis was founded in New York, USA, in 1881. It is currently held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, named after one of the best female tennis players in the world.  The surfaces of the courts have changed over the years. From 1881 until 1974, the tournament was held on grass courts. In 1975 the courts were clay, and stayed this way until 1977. However, from 1978 onwards, the tournament has been played on a hard surface, making it the tennis tournament that we know of today.

The US Open in New York, USA, applies tie breakers to the set for both men and woman. If the score reaches 6-6 in set one or two for woman, or sets one to four for men, players will play a tie breaker to decide the set. However, in the final set for both men and women, the outcome is not decided by a tie breaker. Players continue playing normal games, until one of the players is able to win by two games.

Current US Open Winners

Novak Djokovic is the current US Open men’s champion, winning the singles in 2015. Roger Federer was the runner up in this event. This victory was actually Djokovic’s 10th Major victory, and his second title at the Open in New York, USA. The woman’s singles title in 2015 was taken by Falvia Pennetta and was her very first Major Singles title. Roberta Vinci, also from Italy, took home second place.  Other players that did notably well at the 2015 Open include Martina Hingis, who formed part of both the Woman’s Doubles team, and also the Mixed Doubles team. Leander Paes took home his eighth Grand Slam mixed doubles title, by winning the Mixed Doubles title in 2015.

US Open Tennis Records

Roger Federer is the record holder for winning the most number of consecutive Men’s Singles titles at the US Open. His total currently stands at 5 consecutive wins. Federer also holds the record for the winner of the most Men’s Singles Titles, in the 1967 and onwards period. He holds this record with Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors, with the record currently standing at 5 titles.
